Of course, we can now discuss what role music plays in films. In general.
Of course, directors use it to build up the tension. Or to create a very specific atmosphere. Which doesn’t always work.
But often music is ordered for the film. Or composed by themselves (as in the case of SQÜRL, but that’s a whole other story). In other cases, classical pieces are used. The audience often knows these and so the image is transported with the help of familiar sounds and the audience is… shown.
It is rarer that directors choose experimental music that was not composed for the film. So in the case of György Ligeti. The Free Academy of Arts in Hamburg presented a selection. We were not there. But the thought alone is exciting. And time plays only a subordinate role anyway. More information here (external link):
